Flow Sensor In Reducing Pump Pulsation

The pulsation is an inherent phenomenon of peristaltic pumps. As fluid enters the head, it gets trapped between two rollers in a pillow. This pillow of fluid is dispensed at the outlet and is followed by a void. The alteration of the pillows and voids causes flow pulsation.

There are two parameters to describe the pulsating phenomenon: the frequency of pulsation and the amplitude of pulsation. Featuring a quick response time, the XY-TEK flow sensors can capture the details of the pump characteristics and help evaluate the pump performance. Our Flow Viewer PC software makes it easy to visualize and record the instantaneous flow history, and can help process engineers choose the best approach to reduce the pulsation.

Pump flow pulsation can generate gurgling or churning noises, metallic or thud sounds, plus pressure waves that are not desirable in a lot of applications. It is impossible to eliminate the flow pulsation from a peristaltic pump, but it can be appropriately reduced to meet the requirements of certain applications.

Typical practices to reduce the flow pulsation include

1. Integrating a pulse dampener

2. Mounting multiple pump heads with offset rollers.

3. Using pump heads with offset occlusion and multiple-roller design

4. Adding discharge tubing

Do you want to capture the instantaneous pulsation nature of flows generated by your peristaltic pumps?

Do you want to observe the characteristics of the pump strokes?

Do you want to investigate how flow components such as valves or connectors may affect the flow rates?

You can use our XY-TEK Flow Viewer PC software to visualize and record the flow history so that the pump performance can be evaluated.

The software also has the following functions

  1. Monitor flow rate and total volume
  2. Save flow rate data
  3. Write, read, load, and save sensor configurations
  4. Sensor zero calibration
  5. Sensor flow rate calibration

* Modify the sensor flow rate range parameters

* Modify sensor output mode and settings
